Abstract

Marriage is a good thing ordained by God and recognized in different religions in our society. It becomes saddening where some people turn this beautiful thing into a life of torment for women. In our society today especially Nigeria, marriage has been abused as some people marry off young girls to older men, under the cover of religious belief, this girls married off as early as nine year, some eleven and others thirteen. The Main rationale for this is that they are mature and it promotes chastity. Early marriage introduces young girls into life time torment, as most of them suffer from Vesicovaginal Fistula due early pregnancy. This research work examines the views of various scholars on the subject matter while giving enlightenment on VVF, causes and effect on its victims. This work further shows that there is a link between Vesicovaginal Fistula and Early marriage or child marriage. This research work examines the legal framework protecting young girls from early marriage which in turn protects them from Vesicovaginal Fistula. This research shows the right of a child from marriage is protected internationally and nationally. It further gives the reason for the in effectiveness of the laws protecting the child from early marriage in Nigeria. In this research, recommendations are given on how the laws available can be better tools for the protection of young girls from early marriage, which in turn reduces the prevalence of Fistula in Nigeria.
