ANTI-KIDNAPPING LEGISLATION IN NIGERIA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS AND A CALL FOR IMPLEMENTATION
Abstract
This research work examines the efficiency of Nigerian laws against kidnapping. The study focuses on analysis of the offence of kidnapping with a view of evaluating the efficacy of Nigeria laws relating to the offence and the level of awareness of these laws to the average Nigerian, also what government can do, to speedily, effectively and efficiently tackle the offence of kidnapping while boosting the relevance of government and the effectiveness of enacted laws to the populace. In doing this, the study appraises the provision of domestic laws, the adequacy of these laws to the monitor violations and enforcement of sanctions on kidnappers and the effects of kidnapping in Nigeria. The menace of kidnapping in Nigeria has become a rampant phenomenon. This has increase the rate of insecurity in the country. Therefore, this research recommends and concludes that there should be a strengthening and of the laws governing kidnapping in order to serve as deterrence to those who wish to venture into this wholesome Act. There should also be an increased awareness of the laws against kidnapping in Nigeria. This should also include stiffening of the law due to the gravity of the offence. This will be able to curb the menace of kidnapping in Nigeria and in turn increase the level of security in the country.
