Abstract

This research appraises the often-contentious role of the Nigerian Police Force in protecting human rights within the country. Indeed, the role of the police is sacrosanct to the stability of human society. This research analyzes human rights vis a vis the police adopting the doctrinal methodology reveals that despite the nation�s constitutional, international commitments and several reforms aimed at ensuring that the police effectively upholds human rights, the Nigerian Police Force is still known for abuse and violations and fails to adequately protect citizens. This research examines the various roles of the police and posit that human rights ought to be the life wire and bedrock of the modus operandi of NPF in Nigeria.� With an attempt to scrutinize the effectiveness of the NPF, this research interrogates the challenges faced and discovers that there are ills hindering the effectivity of the police in Nigeria. This research recognizes that the Police Act and judicial activism in the actualization of the provisions relating to human rights as a laudable development This research therefore offers some useful recommendations to arrest the challenges mitigating against the role of the police in the protection of human rights and concludes that there is need for an efficient and effective Nigerian police force dedicated to human rights and protection cannot be overstated and also to achieve a meaningful positive transformation of policing and restore public trust.
