PERCEPTION OF CATHOLIC CHURCHES IN BENIN CITY ON THE NON-LEGALIZATION OF SAME SEX MARRIAGE IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the perception of catholic churches in Benin City on the non-legalization of same sex marriages in Nigeria. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of same-sex marriage in Nigeria and assess the perceptions of Catholic members regarding its legalization. Using a survey research design, the study sampled 170 individuals from two Catholic churches in Benin City. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, and a purposive simple random sampling method was employed. The findings indicate that same-sex marriage is not widely practiced in Nigeria and that there is minimal societal acceptance of it. Additionally, the recognition of same-sex marriage is broadly resisted. The study concluded that same-sex marriage is not prevalent in Nigeria and lacks significant societal support. It also recommended that Catholic churches collaborate to establish a committee to address and counteract homosexual behavior within their communities. �
