PARENTAL SUPERVISION AND YOUTH RESTIVENESS: A SOCIAL LEGAL PERSPECTIVE.

Abstract

Youth restiveness has become a topical issue for discussion in the social, economic and polity domain in Nigeria. It is a fact that Nigeria cannot thrive and progress significantly with youths who are restive. Nigeria�s peace, security and corporate existence as a nation is threatened because of the prevalence of this phenomenon. The causes of youth restiveness amongst others, have been connected to unemployment, lack of basic necessities and lack of proper upbringing. The spiraling effect of youth restiveness are evident in Nigeria as ethnic militia, kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, and involvement in social insecurity. The upsurge of these social vices, has called for a probe as to the role parents play that has contributed to this phenomenon. This research examines the correlation between youth restiveness and parental supervision and how lack of proper parental supervision contributes to the growing effect of youth restiveness in Nigeria. It also analyzes legislation in order to ascertain the extent of legislative protection which have been made available for the children and young persons against poor parenting in Nigeria. This research identifies the existing gaps in these laws which have made its applicability impracticable. It proffers recommendations which, if properly implement will ensure that children become responsible adults. The research therefore concludes that there is a need to enact workable laws geared towards ensuring that children and young persons are properly supervised and protected from abuse. It calls for a more uniform domestication and enforceability of laws protecting the rights of children and young persons across the nation.
