Abstract

Increase in national population, rise in industrial activities and global climatic changes among other factors have given rise to high energy demand in our homes and industries. It is rather obvious that one of the most important resources of a nation is energy. This research examines the downsides of the use of fossil fuel, the major benefits of using renewable energy technology and also addresses some challenges militating against its full operation in Nigeria. The research also discovers that fossil fuel can no longer meet the energy requirements due to their scarcity and rising cost, the diminishing petroleum reserves, and the adverse environmental consequences of exhaust gases from fossil fuel. This research also examines energy policies in Nigeria and notes that there is therefore a need to enact a workable renewable legislation in Nigeria as this would ultimately result in national development. This research therefore calls for a more environmentally friendly and renewable energy sources an alternative energy source in Nigeria as this is a priority issue. This research concludes that there is a need to have a well detailed legal framework in place that would enable a coordinated and rapid growth of renewable energy in Nigeria and it must take cognisance of the need for renewable energy security in Nigeria.
