PROTECTION AND PROMOTION OF THE RIGHTS OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED CHILDREN IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This research work examines the protection and promotion of the rights of internally displaced children in Nigeria. It briefly shows the direct correlation between internal conflicts in Nigeria, internally displaced persons and its relations to child labour. The research considers the ills of displacement as well as child labour. The research goes further to examine the legal and institutional framework regulating the discourse. It was shown that though these laws exist, their promotion and enforcement is lacking in ensuring that IDP children are protected at all times. The project also found that though there are a lot of provisions in already existing laws, both national and regional, that protects and ensures children�s rights in Nigeria, internally displaced children still face the threats posed by child labour as an consequence of internal displacement because these existing laws and frameworks are not effectively promoted and implemented. These laws also lack proper monitoring and enforcement in the Nigerian scenario. It was shown that IDP children suffer more in the form of child labour, as their childhood and development is hampered by the impacts of factors and forces such as child soldiering, denial of education, denial of access to health facilities and shelter, abuse of their rights in the form of sexual exploitation, abduction and kidnapping. The work concludes by suggesting certain solution that if properly implemented will no doubt help curb the internal displacement of children as it undoubtedly propagates child labour.
