THE ADVERSE EFFECT OF CARBON EMISSIONS AND CARBONS SINKS AS A MITIGATING MECHANISM

Abstract

This research work evaluates the adverse effect of the indiscriminate emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases and the use of carbon offset, carbon sequestration and carbon sinks as mitigating mechanisms which have been recognized as well as entrenched in the Kyoto protocol which happens to be an extension of the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC). It further examines the danger of the depletion of these natural carbon sinks such as deforestation, pollution of water bodies as well as land degradation from improper management of land cultivation for agricultural purposes hereby fighting against our natural carbon reservoirs and creating awareness on the maintenance of these carbon sinks helps to prevent its disastrous effect. This study places emphasis on the local and international instruments for carbon emission mitigation through its protocols and agreements to which Nigeria is a party and signatory to as the case maybe with the aim of domesticating these laws to eradicate such disastrous effect this emission has on the environment. This research work recommends that the number of jurisdictions with established oil and gas regulatory regimes that can be modified to incorporate co2 storage issues and forest regrowth. This research work concludes that there should be a consistent and comprehensive regulatory framework for CCS as it will serve as an incentive for effective deployment for CCS technology. �
