KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF MOTHERS WITH CHILDREN UNDER-FIVE IN MANAGING DIARRHOEA USING ORAL REHYDRATION THERAPY AT UGBOR PRIMARY HEALTH CENTER.
Abstract
Diarrhea remains a leading cause of mortality among children under five in Nigeria, despite the proven effectiveness of Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT). This study assessed the knowledge and practice of mothers regarding diarrhea management using ORT at Ugbor Primary Health Center in Benin City. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 190 mothers, selected through random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that while mothers possessed substantial theoretical knowledge - with 80% demonstrating good understanding of diarrhea causes and symptoms, and 92% aware of ORT - significant practical gaps persisted. Although 71% exhibited positive praticess toward ORT, only 67% could correctly prepare ORS, and just 63% utilized zinc supplements as recommended. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant relationship between knowledge levels and practice (p = 0.002). The study concludes that despite adequate knowledge and positive praticess, practical application of ORT remains suboptimal. We recommend enhanced health education programs focusing on hands-on demonstrations of ORS preparation and zinc supplementation to bridge this knowledge-practice gap and improve child health outcomes in the community.
