INFLUENCE OF MASTERY EXPERIENCE ON PROSPECTS OF EDUCATION STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of mastery experience on prospects of education students in tertiary institutions in Edo State. To achieve this broad objective six research questions were raised and answered while six hypotheses were formulated and tested. Descriptive survey research was used to carry out this study. The population of the study comprises of 1,611 education students from Benson Idahosa University and University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. The sample size consisted of 242 education students from both universities. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics. The results revealed that there is a significant influence of the mastery model and assignments in predicting the career prospect of education students in tertiary institutions in Edo State; it also revealed that there is no significant influence of lectures, tests, learning materials and preparation for examinations in the mastery model in predicting the career prospect of education students. The study recommended that the teachers should recognize the tasks of learning and formative assessment to improve students� mastery experience by providing to the students appropriate techniques and feedback to their career prospect as to help them overcome difficulties enhancing their skills, not only in terms of specific content matter, but also to the use of virtual learning environments potential.
