EVALUATION OF DIETARY HABIT AND NUTRITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN IN FAITH MEDIPLEX HOSPITAL BENIN CITY.
Abstract
Social determinants of health (SDOH) play a crucial role in influencing immunization outcomes among children, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study evaluated the impact of social determinants on immunization outcomes among postnatal mothers attending the immunization clinic at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 83 postnatal mothers selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 29. Findings revealed that a majority of respondents demonstrated good knowledge of social determinants influencing immunization outcomes. Key determinants identified included access to healthcare services, maternal education, household income, and availability of clean water and sanitation. High immunization uptake was observed among respondents, with most mothers adhering to recommended immunization schedules for their children. Factors such as regular antenatal care attendance, proximity to healthcare facilities, and exposure to health education significantly contributed to improved immunization outcomes. A statistically significant association was found between social determinants and immunization outcomes , indicating that improved socio-economic and environmental conditions positively influence child immunization practices. Respondents also emphasized the importance of interventions such as free immunization services, community-based health education, and women’s empowerment in enhancing immunization coverage. The study highlights the need for integrating social determinant-focused strategies into immunization programs, including strengthening health education, improving access to healthcare services, and addressing socio-economic barriers. These interventions are essential for improving immunization outcomes and reducing child health inequalities in Nigeria.
