TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT: TIME FOR A PARADIGM SHIFT TO RENEWABLE ENERGY IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Due to man�s deleterious activities on the environment, majorly from the outcome of the exploration of fossil fuels in recent times, the nature and composition of the environment has been altered and compromised thereby resulting to adverse effects such as climate change, global warming, ozone depletion, flood, pollution, acidic rain, health hazards, including economic and social impediments. This therefore calls for shift to renewable energy as an alternative to fossil fuel. The importance of renewable energy cannot be undermined because it is a mechanism by which sustainable environment can be achieved. The environment which we live in must be sustained in order to breed a condusive habitat where man and his future generations can live a healthy and fulfilled life. Therefore, the benefits of renewable energy are numerous and of great importance to mankind such as eliminating the potential disasters of fossil fuel and creating a harmonious environment for man to live in. Many countries have turned their tune to renewable energy and Nigeria should not be left out. This research examines achieving a sustainable environment through a paradigm shift to renewable energy and in so doing, it will examine problems associated with non-renewable energy, the concepts of sustainability and also examine the concept of renewable energy and its sources, institutionalized legal framework for renewable energy and challenges mitigating the development of renewable energy in Nigeria and shall discuss legal approaches and strategies for achieving environment sustainability through renewable energy.
