COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE ANTI-OXIDANT PROPERTIES TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT AND PHYTOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENT OF THE EDIBLE AND NON EDIBLE PARTS OF (CHRYSOPHYLLUM ALBIDUM) AND (CARICA PAPAYA) FRUITS
Abstract
Fruits are excellent sources of essential vitamins,minerals, and are high in fibre. They play important roles in the human diet helping to protect against cancer and other diesases. The aim of this study was to compare thephytochemical constituent, antioxidant properties, totalphenoliccontentand total flavonoid content of the methanolic extracts of Chrysophyllumalbidum exocarp and endocarp, Carica papaya seed, exocarp and endocarp. The methanolic� extracts of Chrysophyllumalbidum exocarp and� endocarcarp and Carica papaya� seed, exocarp and� endocarp showed the presence of phenol, tannins, saponins, quinone, alkaloid and cardiac glycoside. Flavonoid and steroid were absent in Chrysophyllumalbidum exocarp and the endocarp, Carica papaya seed, exocarp and endocarp. The EC 50 value of Chrysophyllumalbidum exocarp(0.450.032mg/ml)is found to be higher than the endocarp(0.550.061mg/ml) for DPPH radical scavenging. Carica papaya seed DPPH radical scavenging is found to be higher compared to the endocarp and exocarp. The Chrysophyllumalbidum endocarp (0.330.93mg/ml) is found to be higher than the exocarp(0.0.0119mg/ml )for H 2 O 2 radical scavenging . While Carica papaya seed H 2 O 2 radical scavenging is higher compared to the endocarp and exocarp. Chrysophyllumalbidum endocarp(0.460.061mg/ml) is found to be higher than the exocarp(0.500.041mg/ml)for TAC.While TAC for Carica papaya endocarp is found to be higher than� seed and exocarp. The total phenolic content of Chrysophyllumalbidum exocarp (0.198mg/GAE) was found higherthan the endocarp (0.18mg/GAE).Total flavonoid content (TFC) of Carica papaya seed 0.007mg/QE) was higher than the Carica papaya endocarp (0.077mg/QE) and exocarp (0.065mg/QE)The total phenolic content of Chrysophyllumalbidum exocarp (0.091mg/QE) was found higher than the endocarp (0.065mg/QE). In conclusion, the exocarp of the fruits studied have good antioxidant activity and contain phytochemicals.
