THE IMPACT OF TERRORISM ON EDUCATION IN THE NORTH EAST OF NIGERIA

Abstract

This research examines the impact of terrorism on education in North East Nigeria. Education system in Nigeria, especially in the North eastern part has been under disruption since 2009 by the set of terrorists named Boko Harram. This group of terrorists has become a threat to many homes and especially on school children and teachers. The research discusses the impact of terrorism on the right to education in North-Eastern Nigeria. It was shown that the plight of the children in the North east region of Nigeria is so worse in relation to their right to education and the government and international communities, however are putting efforts to curb the menace. The research also discusses the existing legal regime protecting the rights of persons under IDP situations to education. It was shown that there are national and international legislation protecting school teachers and children during armed conflict situations, however, there have been poor implementation and enforcement of the laws available in Nigeria, as school children have been negatively affected by the conflict. This research therefore recommends that the Nigerian government needs to take proactive steps to nip the insurgency in the bud so that peace can return to the region. The government should expose and bring to justice Boko Haram activists, their funders, and those who are benefitting from the conflict.
