AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING

Abstract

This research examined the availability and utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) for effective teaching in secondary schools in Rivers West Senatorial District of Rivers State. Four (4) research questions were raised and two (2) hypotheses were formulated for the study. A correlational research design was adopted for this study. Data was collected through the use of questionnaire. The population of the study consists of 3000 teachers from the Senatorial District. 300 teachers which constitute 10% of the population was used as the sample for the study. Instrument used was a Questionnaire and using the Cronbach Alpha method for reliability procedure, the instrument yielded a coefficient of 0.83. The descriptive statistics was used to answer the research questions while the Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 Alpha Level of Significance. The findings of the study included that the availability of ICT infrastructure was significantly related to effective teaching, the extent of utilization of these infrastructures was low and this not significant, there were many challenges limiting the use of ICT in teaching for teachers and learning process and appropriate solutions were proffered. The study recommended that the government and other organization should support schools in provision of ICT infrastructures and organizing training session for teachers. The study also recommended the provision of ICT programs in teachers training curriculum, school curriculum among many others. Further studies on the perception of students on the use of ICT for pedagogy and comparative study of the use of ICT in public and private schools were suggested.
