AN ANALYSIS OF THE RIGHT OF GIRL-CHILD TO EDUCATION IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Education is considered essential for development in any society, as a result the girl-child's right to education forms part of the fundamental entitlements and basic human rights contained in international human rights instruments. Nigerias adoption and ratification of these international human rights instruments shows the level of commitment to childrens rights and specifically the right to education. The research adopted the doctrinal approach that involved the use of primary and secondary source of material to examine what girl-child entails, the legal framework supporting the rights of the girl-child to education both internationally, regionally and nationally. However, the human rights legal framework for education does not capture the full range of factors that are necessary to enhance girls access to education. This is why the study focuses on analyzing existing laws that guarantee girl-child education by looking at the challenges and making necessary recommendations to overcome the challenges.
