INFLUENCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES ON THE TEACHING OF CHEMISTRY

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of instructional resources on the teaching of chemistry in public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. To achieve the objective of the study, four research questions were raised and answered using pearson product moment correlation coefficient (PPMCC), while four hypotheses were formulated and tested using simple linear regression. All the null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance in order to determine the influence of instructional resources in the teaching of chemistry in public senior secondary schools (SS2) in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. A thirty-seven (37) item questionnaire was administered on the respondents by the researcher. Correlational survey research design was used to carry out this study. The sample size consisted of 169 chemistry students (SS2), 2 chemistry teachers and 2 principals giving a total sample size of 172 from the fourteen (14) public senior secondary schools in the Local Government Area. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire titled ��Instructional Resources for Teaching of Chemistry Questionnaire� (IRTCQ). The instrument was validated and trial tested. The data generated were analysed using Cronbach Alpha Statistics and it yielded reliability index of 0.85. The research found out that there were good number of factors that influence excellent performance of students offering chemistry. The factors include: availability, adequacy and utilization of instructional resources and teachers' qualifications. The findings of this study showed that there was a significant relationship between availability and utilization of instructional resource in teaching of chemistry and the academic performance of secondary school students. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended that there should be periodical investigation and supervision of the availability of materials for teaching of science in general but chemistry in particular. At the end of each investigation, the list of unavailable materials should be compiled and purchased.
