THE RE-INTEGRATION AND AFTERCARE SERVICES OF EX-CONVICTS IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Recidivism is a bane affecting the Nigeria society. The possibility of reoffending in Nigeria is very high. The reason for this is not farfetched. The functional parts of the prisons charged with the responsibility of the rehabilitation of offenders as well as provision of rehabilitative cum aftercare services are all broken down, thus contributing negatively in maintaining the whole structure of the prisons system. Due to the nature of Nigerian prisons, the end result of the whole process is ironically intended to the contrary. The Study employed the descriptive and explanatory design to bring to fore the multi-faceted problems affecting the successful reintegration and rehabilitation of offenders in Nigeria. The researcher is of the view that legal (local legislation) as well as institutional framework that caters for the rehabilitation, reintegration and provision of aftercare service for offenders is lacking in Nigeria. The thrust of this work is to proffer lasting solutions that will have a far-reaching effect on the challenges facing recidivism in the country.
