AN APPRAISAL OF THE NIGERIAN LEGAL SYSTEM: ANY NEED FOR REFORMS?

Abstract

This research analyses the Nigerian legal system evaluating its effectiveness, efficiency, and responsiveness to the needs of the society. The research examines the historical development, structure, and functioning of the legal system, highlighting its strengths and weakness. The study scrutinises the role of the judiciary, the legal profession, and the legislative framework, identifying areas that require reform. The research explores issues such as access to justice, judicial independence, corruption, delays, and the impact of colonial legacy on the legal system. The research adopts the doctrinal methodology and examines both primary and secondary sources in order to evaluate and conduct legal hypothesis. The research argues that the Nigerian legal system requires urgent reform to address the challenges of the 21 st century, promote the rule of law, and ensure justice and fairness for all. The research contributes to knowledge on the area of emphasizing the need for improved legal education and training. The findings for this research is that the the Nigerian government has yet to legally recognise smart contracts and blockchain technology. The researchtherefore recommends for inclusive legal education reform, and legislative reform, to create a more effective, efficient, and responsive legal system that serves the needs of the Nigerian People. The research concludes by stating that reforms enhance the competence, integrity, and effectiveness of legal practitioners, ultimately improving access to justice and the overall legal system in Nigeria.
