INFLUENCE OF SEX EDUCATION ON THE SPREAD OF HIV/AIDS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE.

Abstract

This study examined the influence of sex education on the perceived spread of HIV/AIDS among secondary school students. Four research questions were raised by the researcher. Does sex education exit in secondary schools? What is the disposition of students regarding sexual experience? How do male and female students perceive HIV/AIDS? Does sex education influence the spread of HIV/AIDs? It was a descriptive survey. Using the purposive sampling and random techniques, a total of 104 subjects were drawn from the selected schools where sex education was taught. A questionnaire was used to collect data from the students. The instrument which was validated by experts had a test reliability of 0.788 using Cronbach�s Alpha Coefficient. The findings of the study revealed that students had heard and learned about sex education, though not all aspects were taught at the various secondary schools used for the study. In addition, it was found that sex education �positively influenced the spread of HIV/AIDS.The data collected were analysed with percentage and chi-square statistical tool, while the null hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r) and the t-test. The study recommended that, the Ministry of Education should encourage all secondary schools to teach sex education, using the appropriate aspects suitable for the growing child. Religious bodies should continue to preach the message of abstinence and organise educative programmes for adolescents. Teachers, parents and school heads should be enlightened on the importance of passing the right information about sexuality to their wards. This can be done by organizing seminars, symposia, among others, for them.� �
