AN ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Waste management is considered as one of the most immediate and very serious environmental problems confronting developing countries like Nigeria. Waste management comprises of activities such as collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste. The research examines the legal framework for waste management in Nigeria and identified the major challenges inhibiting the attainment of sustainability in terms of handling and the treatment of waste in the country to low level of environmental awareness, poor funding and inappropriate technology, corruption and unplanned development. Another major issue identified is that of poor implementation of laws with no punitive measures carried out based on violations particularly with regards to waste management during Covid-19 pandemic which is currently affecting almost every country of the world. This work therefore recommends that the laws as regards waste management should be strictly implemented and the citizens should be more on enlightened how waste should be disposed of especially as regards to biomedical waste because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
