INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT ON CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE
Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to examine the influence of school environment on curriculum implementation in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. A total of 58 Teachers from Public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area participated in this study. A five point scale questionnaire was used for the data collection. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The instrument attained a Cronbach alpha value of 0.72. The first findings in this study revealed to a large extent that location of the school has an influence on the curriculum implementation in public secondary schools due to unconducive and inadequate school environment in rural areas than in urban areas. However, the corresponding hypothesis one revealed that there is significant difference in curriculum implementation between rural and urban public schools in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State. The second finding in this study revealed the general conditions of infrastructure especially in public schools are poor and that rural schools have found it more difficult to implement the curriculum, compared to schools in urban areas. While the corresponding hypothesis revealed the significant influence in the availability of resource materials on curriculum implementation in public secondary schools. The third finding revealed the significant influence of teaching methods on curriculum implementation in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State. However, the corresponding hypothesis revealed that there is a significant influence of teaching methods on curriculum implementation in public schools. The fourth finding in this study revealed that the quality and quantity of teachers in public schools significantly affect the implementation of curriculum in secondary schools on Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State. However, the corresponding hypothesis revealed there is a significant influence of quality of teachers on curriculum implementation in public schools in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State. The implication is poor teaching methods, inadequate provision of human, material and financial resources deployed for curriculum development and implementation in public secondary schools. Furthermore, to revitalize� education and consolidate educational system in Nigeria, government should provide enough funds, pay teachers� salaries, allowances, pension and gratuity promptly, review curriculum on a consistent basis, build schools in conducive environment and eradicate inadequate provision of human, material and financial resources for curriculum development in educational system. Based on this research findings, it is recommended that training and re-training of teachers should be given a vital consideration for efficient curriculum implementation. This will improve quality of teachers� in education. Schools should be provided with adequate resource materials, facilities, modern buildings that are conducive to students learning, as these will aid the teacher in teaching the students and also go a long way in implementing the curriculum. Government should involve teachers in curriculum planning and development to give them sense of recognition.
