Abstract

This study assessed the knowledge of breast cancer screening among female accounting students at Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Edo State. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was adopted, and data were collected from 101 respondents using a structured questionnaire. The socio-demographic data showed that most respondents (58.4%) were aged 15–19 years, predominantly single (97%), and all were Christians (99%). Findings revealed that while 81.2% had heard about breast cancer screening, their overall knowledge was low. Only 22.8% correctly identified women with a family history as being at higher risk, and just 20.8% believed screening should be done even without symptoms. Understanding of breast cancer screening methods was also limited, as 58.4% were neutral on breast self-examination (BSE), 51.5% on mammography, and 61.4% on clinical breast examination (CBE). Although 96% reported receiving some form of education on screening, very few practiced it regularly. Major barriers identified included fear of positive results (98%), financial constraints (66.3%), busy academic schedules (96%), and feelings of embarrassment during screening (94.1%). In conclusion, the study revealed that despite moderate awareness, the overall level of knowledge and practice regarding breast cancer screening among female accounting students remains low. There is a pressing need for targeted health education campaigns and on-campus screening initiatives to promote early detection and reduce misconceptions about breast cancer screening.
