EXAMINATION OF INCIDENCES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA: CANVASSING FOR A PARADIGM SHIFT

Abstract

This Research work examines the nature of domestic violence under the back drop of some Legal Frameworks designed to safeguard women�s rights in Nigeria. This research has shown that domestic violence is one of the worst subjugation and oppression experienced by women and it manifests in many forms such as infliction of physical, emotional, economic, religious as well as sexual abuse, marital rape and battering. Although, the degree differs from society to society, the occurrence has profound and destructive consequences including psychological, physical, emotional and social disorders. The fact that domestic violence prevails across all strata of the Nigerian Society is no longer debatable. Despite the spirited efforts made by some world bodies such as the United Nations making effective use of the Universal Declaration of Human rights, the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights to eliminate discrimination and Violence against women. This research discovers that the cultural resistance and inadequate implementation of the relevant statutes militates against the progress that should be recorded in this regard. The research therefore recommends and concludes that Nigeria should enact an effective Federal Legislation and strengthen its enforcement mechanism, organize extensive orientation on the right of women and how they can enforce their rights. Finally this work calls on Nigeria to ratify and domesticate all International treaties and Conventions in this regard.
