ISOLATION OF Klebsiella SPECIES FROM ABATTOIR EFFLUENT IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

Klebsiella specie is one of the major contaminants in the abattoir because of its frequent association with cow and cattle carcasses. A total of 4 effluent samples were collected from abattoir effluent located at Ikpoba-Hill, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria and taken to the Microbiology Laboratory in Benson Idahosa University in cold-park for immediate analysis. The isolation of Klebsiella species was done by standard microbiological techniques using MacConkey agar. The mean Heterotrophic and Klebsiella count range from 17.0�3.0 to 139.0�16.6 cfu/ml and 160.0�30.0 to 360.0�40.0 cfu/ml respectively.The presence of heterotrophic bacterial and Klebsiella species in abattoir effluent is an indication that abattoir effluent could be a source of surface water contamination and of potential public health concern. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate current environmental, veterinary, and public health policies to monitor and produce safe effluents.
