KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE OF CARE OF THE ELDERLY AMONGST NURSES IN FAITH MEDIPLEX HOSPITAL, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE

Abstract

The global increase in the ageing population has heightened the demand for quality geriatric care. Nurses play a pivotal role in elderly care, yet their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) may influence patient outcomes. This study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice of care of the elderly amongst nurses in Faith Mediplex Hospital, Benin City, Edo State. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The target population comprised 100 nurses, and a sample size of 87 was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula. A simple random sampling technique was employed. A structured, self-administered questionnaire validated by face and content validity, with a reliability coefficient of 0.84 (Cronbach’s alpha), was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations) and inferential statistics (chi-square test) at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed that the majority of respondents (57.5%) had received formal training on elderly care, and 40.2% rated their knowledge as good. Most nurses demonstrated a positive attitude: 40.2% agreed they enjoy working with elderly patients, and 34.5% disagreed that elderly patients are a burden to the healthcare system. Regarding practice, mean scores ranged from 56.25 to 78.88, indicating good adherence to preventive and supportive care measures. However, barriers such as limited availability of personal protective equipment (91.1%) and inadequate supply of clean water and sanitizers (100%) were identified. The chi-square test revealed a significant relationship between knowledge level and practice (χ² = 326.6, p < 0.05). The study concluded that while nurses possess adequate knowledge and a favorable attitude towards elderly care, practice is hindered by resource and institutional barriers. Recommendations include regular in-service training, provision of geriatric-specific supplies, and establishment of specialized elderly care units.
