Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between the job satisfaction of mathematics teachers in secondary schools and their performance. Four research questions were raised by the researcher: do mathematics teachers have job satisfaction? What is the relationship between the job satisfaction and performance of male mathematics teachers? What is the relationship between the job satisfaction and performance of female mathematics teachers? What is the relationship between the job satisfaction of mathematics teachers and their performance? The study also formulated and tested three null hypotheses. It was a correlational survey. The population was made up of 548 male and female mathematics teachers in 127 secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. Using the purposive sampling technique, a total of 40 respondents were drawn from nine public and private secondary schools. The instrument used for the collection of data was the questionnaire. The Job Satisfaction questionnaire was validated by three experts while the Job Performance questionnaire was validated by an expert, all in the Department of Education, Benson Idahosa University. The Job Satisfaction questionnaire had a reliability index of 0.875 using the Cronbach�s Alpha, while the Job Performance questionnaire had reliability indexes of 0.828 for Punctuality, 0.866 for Subject Mastery, 0.737 for Lesson Preparation, 0.864 for Teaching Methods, 0.955 for classroom Management and 0.964 for Evaluation. The results revealed that mathematics teachers were not satisfied with their jobs, it also revealed that male mathematics teachers had low job satisfaction, as well as female mathematics teachers. In addition, it was shown that the job satisfaction of mathematics teachers had a significant relationship with their performance. Some recommendations were made by the researcher. � �
