FACTORS INFLUENCING TEENAGE PREGNANCY AMONG ADOLESCENT GIRLS

Abstract

This study investigated the factors influencing teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve this broad objective, three research questions were raised and answered while three corresponding hypotheses were formulated and tested. Correlational research design was used to carry out this study. The population of the study comprised two hundred and four (204) Small and Medium Enterprises in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. Stratified random sampling technique was used. Taro Yamane method for sample size calculation was used to get the sample size of one hundred and thirty-five (135) Small and Medium Enterprises. The research instrument used was a structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between parental financial status and teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State; there was a significant relationship between degree of interest in school and teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State; and there was a significant relationship between parental desire for early marriage and teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area. It was recommended that there should be public enlightenment programme for teenagers and parents by the Ministry of Education or women Affairs in dangers of teenage pregnancy and early marriage.
