A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF THE PROBLEM OF OIL THEFT AND OIL PIPELINE VANDALISM IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This work analyses the effects of oil theft and oil pipeline vandalism in Nigeria. Over the years the act of pipeline vandalization has grown very rampant in Nigeria, especially in the Niger Delta area. It is on record that Nigeria had about 3000 cases of pipeline vandalization from the year 2010-2015. In the year 2016 now over 1,600 cases of pipeline vandalization were recorded. Pipeline vandalization has been identified as a menace to Nigeria�s economy because of its negative effect on the oil industry which is the major source of income of the country. Due to pipeline vandalization Nigeria�s rate of oil production has dropped drastically. The research also analyses the problem of oil theft and pipeline vandalization, its effects on the environment and the economy, the position of the law on these issues and ways in which these acts can be curbed. The research recommends that relevant security agencies such as the Nigerian military, the police and the NSCDC need to be well-equipped to secure the pipeline networks in Nigeria effectively. Proper funding of the security agencies motivates them to carry out their responsibilities efficiently.
