Abstract

This research examines Human trafficking in Nigeria. This is to determine the scope of human trafficking. The research adopts the doctrinal methodology. It reviews the laws or legal framework prohibiting human trafficking. Human trafficking not only contravenes with the elemental human rights of an individual but is also a violation of ethics and morals a nation must hold in its essence. This research finds that human trafficking is compared with an ultra-modern form of slavery in the form of bonded labor, prostitution, domestic servitude and other kinds of toiling where these victims have to act against his/her own will. The victims are generally the people belonging to the economically disadvantaged section of society or due to several factors such as poverty, lack of adequate legislation on the part of government and its authorized agencies. The research focuses on legislative measures, such as the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administrative Act (TIPPEA), the Criminal Code, the Child Rights Act alongside other international mechanisms and other law enforcement agencies. This research finds that despite international and domestic efforts, the threat is not abating and so recommends amongst others, that in addition to strict adherence and enforcement of existing laws and legislations, judges must also be aware of the context of each case involving human trafficking. By synthesizing these findings, this research offers insights into potential reforms and strategies to enhance the judicial responses to human trafficking in Nigeria, aiming to contribute to ongoing efforts for improved prevention, prosecution and protection of victims.
