AN EXAMINATION OF THE LEGAL FRAME WORK FOR COMBATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This research examines the effectives of the laws regulating human trafficking and illegal immigration in Nigeria. The magnitude of problem as well its despicable nature, triggered increasing legislation in Nigeria in recent years. This research reveals that despite the remarkable efforts in terms of laws and policy in approaching the problem, it still appears to persist. The objective of the research is to demonstrate that law and policy approaches to addressing the issue are not proving effective, hence it still appears that several issues relating human trafficking and illegal immigration remains unaddressed. The study further investigates the legal framework in combating human trafficking and illegal immigration both of international and local statues regulating the activities of traffickers and illegal migrants. The research concludes by recommending the need for a continuous and further ratification and implementation of international legislation along with the use of national legal tools currently available to fight against trafficking in human beings and illegal immigration and the repeal of laws that are obsolete which therefore have no effect.
