EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS IN ADDRESSING CHALLENGES OF GLOBAL WARMING IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This research carries out an examination on the effectiveness of environmental laws addressing global warming challenges in Nigeria. Global warming poses a critical threat to the ecosystem, driven by both natural and man-made factors that have severely impacted the atmosphere, depleted the ozone layer, and altered climatic conditions worldwide. Numerous regions continue to face natural disasters such as flooding, wildfires, hurricanes, and typhoons, which are linked to climate change. Scientists warn that without mitigation, these events will intensify. The global response to these issues includes examining Nigeria�s actions against global warming and climate change. This research analyzes Nigeria�s climate change legislation and environmental policies using the doctrinal method of legal research. It seeks to determine whether Nigeria has a robust legal framework for environmental protection regarding climate change and global warming. The findings indicate that Nigeria has enacted several laws and policies on environmental protection, including the Climate Change Act, NESREA Act 2007, PIA Act 2021 and the NOSDRA Act 2007. Additionally, the Lagos State Government has introduced a carbon emission reduction policy. Despite these efforts, enforcement is hampered by public ignorance, limited information, inadequate funding, and an inefficient judicial system. The research recommends enhancing public awareness, securing better funding, and establishing an efficient institutional framework to ensure compliance with environmental standards. The research concludes that while Nigeria has made positive strides in legislation, more proactive measures are needed. �
