AN EXAMINATION OF THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK PROHIBITING GENDER INJUSTICE IN NIGERIA

Abstract

� This research examines the legal frameworkprohibitingGenderinjusticeinNigeriahighlighting the constitutional and statutory prohibitions aimed at promoting gender equality and combating discrimination. Despite the existence of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gender injustice still persists in Nigeria. The study identifies the gaps in the legal framework, including the lack of implementation and enforcement mechanisms, cultural and religious barriers. This research adopts the doctrinal methodology and examines both primary and secondary sources in order to evaluate and confirm legal hypothesis. The Study finds that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria prohibits every form of discrimination. TheStudy also finds that Forum of Nigerian Women in Politics is an example of an ambitious organisation, whose central objective is to promote women empowerment and eradication ofall forms of discrimination against women. The study recommends the need of enacting stringent laws in curbing gender injusticeandalsoenforcingthesaidlawstoensurethatthesocietyisfree from the cankerworm of Gender injustice. The study concludes by emphasising on the need of government setting a rationale, action plan and effective policy planning across public and private institutions for the promotion of equality.
