Abstract

This work is an examination of the environment and the problems it faces in regards to pollution and how it has had adverse effects on the children in Nigeria using the Niger Delta as a case study due to the well known polluted environments as a result of their natural resources being exploited. This research work examines the health implications of the environmental pollution as it affects children in Nigeria with specification as the Niger Delta Region as a case study. It posits that environmental pollution has been the bane of the Nigerian environment, and this is not just evident in Nigeria alone but in other parts of the world, the health implications of these environmental degrading activities are enormous. This research work investigates the importance of a healthy environment and how a healthy environment affects the health of the Children in Nigeria. It further examines the views and opinions of various authors and writers with regards to environmental pollution and finds that the lack of environmental policies affects the health of children in Nigeria and note that the Government has failed to provide sufficient laws to protect the environment and human health and it further to note that the existing laws are obsolete. This research also examines the causes of environmental pollution, the challenges the Nigerians faced due to environmental pollution. It recommends that the existing legislations should be renewed in line with present realities of Nigeria. The research concludes that a clean environment and good health can be achieved through proper legislations that protect the environment.
