AN EXAMINATION OF THE LEGAL REGIME ON THE PROTECTION OF THE TERRITORIAL WATERS OF NIGERIA
Abstract
This research work examines the Legal Regime on the protection of the Territorial Waters of Nigeria. The aim of this research work is to identify the various laws protecting the territorial water of Nigeria. The research finds out that there are laws protecting the territorial waters of Nigeria. Despite these existing laws that have been put in place for the protection of territorial waters of Nigeria, the territorial waters is abused by pollution and pipeline criminal vanders. The Research thus investigates the various laws in a bid to decipher the challenges hindering the protection of territorial waters in Nigeria. This research recommends that Nigeria Navy should be equipped with modern weapons to protect the territorial waters. The Nigerian Legislature need to take a proactive step and follow international best practices with respect of legal frame work for the protection of territorial waters. The study concludes that the effects of pollution, ship leakage and pipeline vanders undermine the laws put in place for the protection of Territorial Waters in Nigeria and must be addressed.� xiii �
