INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL RELATED FACTORS ON EDUCATIONAL WASTAGE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN CENTRAL SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF DELTA STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This work examines the influence of school related factors of educational wastage in public secondary schools in Central Senatorial District of Delta State, Nigeria. The target population for this study consists of principals, vice-principal and head-teachers from 34 public secondary schools in central senatorial districts of Delta State. The research instrument used was a questionnaire titled: �Questionnaire on influence of school based factors on educational wastages in public secondary schools in Central Senatorial District of Delta State�. The mean, t-test and multiple regression statistics was used for the analysis of data collected from the field. The result obtained showed that: Teachers� attitude is not a significant predictor of the educational wastage among public secondary schools in Delta State (R = -.175, P > 0.05). School facilities is not a significant predictor of the educational wastage among public secondary schools in Delta State (R = -.062, P > 0.05). The study also found out that Time utilization is not a significant predictor of the educational wastage among public secondary schools in Delta State (R = .066, P > 0.05); Teaching strategies is not a significant predictor of the educational wastage among public secondary schools in Delta State (R = -.017, P >0.05), and School based factors as a whole is not significant predictor of the educational wastage among public secondary schools in Delta State (R = .007, P > 0.05).� Based on the findings, the study recommends that extensive sensitization and awareness programs should be conducted on quarterly basis to enlighten teachers on the need to portray a positive attitude to the students within and outside the school environment. In addition, the school counselors should prepare a program to work with students before they sit for both internal and external examinations to allay their fears and phobia for examinations and also creating an environment where students would be encouraged.
