Abstract

The nurse–patient relationship is a fundamental determinant of patient perception and satisfaction, shaping the overall quality of care delivered in healthcare settings. This study assessed patient perception and satisfaction with the nurse–patient relationship at Faith Mediplex Hospital, Benin City. The aim of the study was to evaluate how patients perceive nurses’ attitudes, communication, empathy, and responsiveness, and to determine their satisfaction with emotional and physical care. The population of the study was made up of 200 adult patients aged 18 and above. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used, and data were collected from 134 in patients through a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages, and inferential analysis using the Chi-square test and correlational analysis. Findings revealed that 27.9% of respondents strongly agreed and 42.0% agreed that the nurse–patient relationship was positive. Similarly, 28.7% strongly agreed and 40.4% agreed that they were satisfied with the care received. Most patients rated respect, communication, and professionalism highly, while emotional support (59.7%) and nurse availability (55.2%) were identified as areas needing improvement. The Chi-square test showed no significant association between patient satisfaction and demographic factors such as age, gender, or educational level (p > 0.05), but a significant association existed between perception and satisfaction (χ² = 18.26, df = 8, p = 0.02). The study concluded that although patients were generally satisfied with the nurse–patient relationship, improvements are needed in emotional support, pain management, and nurse availability. It is recommended that nurses strengthen empathy, therapeutic communication, and responsiveness, while hospital management should reduce workloads and provide regular in-service training on interpersonal and cultural sensitivity skills. Implementing these measures will enhance patient satisfaction and promote quality nursing care. Keywords: Patient, Perception, Satisfaction, Nurse, Patient.
