ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS DEVIANT BEHAVIOUR AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AMONG SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

Abstract

The study investigated students� deviant behaviour and classroom management among some selected secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The objective was to determine the prevalence of deviant behaviour among secondary school students, find out the level of deviant behaviour based on class level, prevalence of deviant behaviour based on family background, ascertain the prevalence of deviant behaviour based on school type and determine the relationship between deviant behaviour and classroom management. Also, hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The survey method was adopted. A sample of 110 secondary school teachers was drawn from the population of 289 secondary school teachers in Oredo Local Government Area. The reliability of the instrument used for the survey was tested and yielded an index of (0.75). The data was analysed using frequency counts, mean, standard deviation and chi-square test. The result of analysis revealed a high level of many deviant behaviours except absenteeism which was moderate, SS3 class were more predisposed to deviancy than any other class, deviancy behaviours were rife among students who are from the upper social class than� the other social class, most deviant behaviour were common in public schools while specific deviant behaviour such as misconduct were rife among private schools and classroom management were adversely affected by deviancy behaviour exhibited by secondary school students. Recommendations were proffered and the study concludes that deviant behaviour was endemic among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area and as a result no matter the classroom management style adopted, none will be effective. �
