AN APPRAISAL OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST MEN IN ARMED CONFLICT SITUATIONS

Abstract

This research examines the social and legal gaps in the representation of men as victims of sexual violence most specifically in armed conflict situations. This research in achieving the aforementioned and it�s aim and objectives, employs the doctrinal method of research.. This research highlights the distinction between international humanitarian law and human rights law; it finds that the nature of sexual violence against men also occur in form of rape, enforced sterilization and sexual slavery. It further discusses the effects of sexual violence against men in the aforementioned forms, in armed conflict situations and provides that sexual violence against men is not limited to any geographical region or cultural context, neither is it limited in its form, its perpetrators, its victims, or its setting. This research therefore recommends the enhancement of legal regulatory frameworks to include the provision for the offence of sexual violence against men and concludes that �sexual violence against men in armed conflict and generally, is a significant and under-recognized issue. As it is a gross violation of international law and a grave breach of human rights, that needs to be addressed. �
