AN EXAMINATION OF THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IN COMBATING ILLEGAL MIGRATION

Abstract

This research examines the role of the international community in combating illegal migration. This research identifies the causes of illegal migration and why citizens are tempted to move from their country. This research identifies the regional and international laws on migration such as the protocol on Free Movements of Persons, the Right of Residence and Establishment, Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problem in Africa, the 1979 protocol to free movements and its supplementary protocol, the protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air, the 1951 Refugees Convention and its 1967 Protocol. These International and regional treaties define the proper meaning of migration and establishes when migration is deemed to be illegal. Furthermore, this research identifies the appropriate international bodies on international migration and their contribution towards curbing illegal migration such as the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations high commissioner for refugee protection, the Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European commission, the African union and the Economic States of West Africa. Also this research recommends various actions that can be taken to avoid illegal migration. This research concludes that the international community needs to be more practical than theoretical in their attempt to curb this menace of illegal migration that�s becoming a trend especially in Africa.
