In the latest Inaugural Times Higher Education’s (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa
University Rankings for 2023, Benson Idahosa University has emerged top-
ten among private universities in Nigeria and top-three among Nigerian
universities.

THE’s Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2023 was officially announced
at the organization’s first forum which took place in partnership with Ashesi
University in Ghana. The forum was themed ‘Revolutionising African Higher
Education.’

At a colourful unveiling event were the results were announced, no fewer than
Fifty-one (51) Nigerian tertiary institutions made the list of top universities on
the African continent with Benson Idahosa University emerging as the third.

Benson Idahosa University’s inclusion among the top three universities in the
Sub-Saharan ranking is a testament to the institution’s commitment to
providing an excellent student and staff experience. The university’s
dedication to maintaining high-quality facilities, fostering strong peer and
faculty interactions, ensuring employability prospects, delivering excellent
courses, and promoting teaching engagement has garnered positive
recognition in the region.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Prof. Johnson
Oyedeji expressed his delight at the ranking, emphasizing the university’s
continuous efforts to deliver holistic education and create an enabling
environment for student success. He further acknowledged the invaluable
contributions of the faculty, staff, and students in achieving this milestone.

He added that as Benson Idahosa University celebrates its inclusion among
the top three Nigerian universities in the Sub-Saharan Africa University.

Rankings 2023, the university will remain steadfast in its commitment to
providing a world-class educational experience and preparing students for
future success in their chosen fields.

According to Peter Okebukola, who was a former Executive Secretary of the
National Universities Commission (NUC), the methodology of the sub-
Saharan African rankings is on “five pillars- resources and finance (20%);
access and fairness (20%); teaching skills (20%); student engagement (20%)
and Africa impact (20%).”

Prof. Okebukola, who is the Chairman of the Nigerian Universities Ranking
Advisory Committee (NURAC), led a delegation from Nigeria to attend the
event which took place in Accra, Ghana on June 26.

Other universities that appeared on the elite list and their ranks are the Federal
University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; Nnamdi Azikiwe University; Redeemer’s
University; University of Ibadan; CRUTECH; OAU, Ife; Umaru Musa Yar’Adua
University; Adeleke University and Ahmadu Bello University.

BIU gets NUC’s full accreditation for four academic programmes

Four academic programmes at Benson Idahosa University have received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC). The Executive Secretary of the NUC, through the Director of Accreditation, Dr. Maryam Sali, made this known in a letter sent to the Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Prof. Sam Guobadia on the 14th of April, 2022. The letter reads: “The National Universities Commission (NUC) has the statutory mandate to accredit academic programmes in all Nigerian Universities.” It continues: “Pursuant to this mandate and in consonance with the provisions of the current Government approved guidelines, initial accreditation of new programme is held after the programme has run for two academic sessions following approval for the establishment of the programme. Thereafter, the commission accredits the approved programmes as and when due.” The letter further read: “Consequently, the NUC organized the accreditation of academic programmes at the Benson Idahosa University, Benin-City, in October/November 2021. The four programmes that received full accreditation are Nursing Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. In his reaction, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sam Guobadia appreciated the efforts of the NUC at ensuring quality and high standard of courses in universities.
