In a heartfelt tribute to the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa, the founder of Benson Idahosa University (BIU), the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Aroye Okhuoya, celebrated the extraordinary life and legacy of the renowned preacher, educator, and pioneer of modern Pentecostalism in Africa.
The eulogy was delivered during penultimate chapel service before the Easter Celebrations at the Legacy Campus of the University, where the VC reflected on the archbishop’s visionary leadership, unwavering faith, and transformative impact on education and global Christianity.
A Life of Unmatched Faith and Courage
Prof. John Okhuoya described Archbishop Idahosa as a “spiritual giant” whose boldness and miracles brought hope to millions. “He was not born with a silver spoon…but what he had and what he nurtured was faith; a burning faith in God. He rose to become one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century not just in Nigeria, but across the world,” the VC stated.
The Vice-Chancellor recounted how Idahosa, against all odds, built one of Africa’s largest churches, Church of God Mission International, and pioneered mass evangelism across the continent. “In 1968, he inaugurated the Church of God Mission. His ministry, the Church of God Mission started with outdoor crusades, healing services, and a daring message of Faith,” he added.
The Birth of Benson Idahosa University
Highlighting the archbishop’s commitment to education, the VC noted that BIU was birthed from his belief that “true transformation comes through both spiritual and intellectual empowerment.”
“Archbishop Idahosa didn’t just want to win souls; he wanted to raise leaders who would change the world…loved education and never let go of any opportunity to learn. That’s why he established this great institution—to combine academic excellence with Godly character,” Prof. Okhuoya explained.
He emphasized that BIU remains a fulfillment of the founder’s dream, producing graduates who excel in various fields while upholding strong moral values.
A Legacy That Lives On
The VC urged the BIU community to uphold Idahosa’s legacy by embracing his core values: faith in God, obedience to God, hard work, and leadership.
“We are not just students and staff of a university; we are not here by accident; we are here by assignment. The university is not only a place of learning, it is a launchpad for destiny…let every student arise with vision, let every lecturer teach with purpose, every administrator lead with integrity,” he declared.
Tributes from Faculty and Students
The event also featured moving testimonies from staff and alumni who attested to the founder’s enduring influence.
Dr. Gregory Onaiwu, a senior faculty member, shared, “Archbishop Idahosa’s spirit of excellence still drives us. He taught us that mediocrity has no place in the kingdom.”
An Alumni and Head, Life Success Center, Alex Osagie, also known as Mr. Upgrade, added, “Hearing about his life inspires me to dream bigger. I’m proud to be part of his vision.”
Conclusion
As BIU continues to grow, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to preserving Archbishop Idahosa’s vision—raising leaders who will transform society through faith, knowledge, and innovation.
The service ended with a call to action for the BIU community to “keep the fire burning” and ensure that the founder’s exploits are never forgotten.
